We are so excited to be
celebrating Book Week this Term during Week 5. We have already had our first
taste of this excitement as Mr. Donaldson read the beginning of a story to us
at Assembly. On Tuesday, he will finish reading it to us in the Learning Hub.
In the weeks leading up to Book Week other teachers will share stories with us
during Assembly.
Author
Visits
The following author visits will also take place as part of
this celebration:
Steven Herrick- Years 3-6 (Monday 12
August)
Steven Herrick
is Australia’s most popular poet for young people. He is widely recognised as
the pioneer of verse-novels for young people, writing humorous books including Untangling Spaghetti and Pookie Aleera Is Not My Boyfriend.
Students in Years 3-6 will enjoy his innovative and energetic performance and
appreciate the vision and humour of Steven’s poetry. There will be an
opportunity for students to purchase these two books after the performance if
they wish. Books will be $14 each and students will be required to bring money
to school on the day for these purchases.
Sam Derchie- Years C-2
(Wednesday 21 August)
Sam Derchie is a
descendant of the Ashanti people of Ghana in West Africa. From the age of six,
under the tutelage of his grandfather, he was taught the storytelling art of
‘Anansesem’ and the art of the Talking Drum. In traditional Ghanaian clothing,
Sam introduces students to the simplicity of Ananse Stories and gives them an
insight into the language, music, instruments and dance.
Book Week
Celebration Day
The CBCA (Children’s
Book Council of Australia) Book Week theme for 2019 is ‘Reading is my Secret Power’. On Wednesday, 21 August students are asked to come dressed as a
favourite book character or in a costume that connects to the theme. Costumes
do not need to be elaborate - a hat, basic prop or different hairstyle can help
to portray a character.
We will be hosting a parade for all Junior School students
from Cottage to Year 6, commencing at 11:10am in the Valley. All parents and
families are warmly invited to attend from 10:30am
where a coffee van will be available for refreshments.
To help with the preparation of the parade we ask that you
fill out the below form with the costume that your child is planning on wearing
before Tuesday 20 August.
Book Fair
This year we are also hosting a book fair where families are
able to come view and purchase some quality children’s books. The book fair will
be open Monday 19, Tuesday 20 and Wednesday 21 from 8:00-8:30am
and from 10:00am on Wednesday 21,
prior to the Book Week parade.
